In the field of maritime security, advanced artificial intelligence technology – AI – is opening new horizons in the way we deal with and predict maritime crime events. This technology enables the identification and prediction of maritime crime incidents before they occur, while significantly contributing to increasing maritime security. As part of our project, we were involved in the characterization and design of an advanced user interface, intended for maritime controllers during their work. This interface combines an intuitive and accessible design, emphasizing excellent user experience (UX) and a clear and convenient user interface (UI). We focus on aspects of ease of use, customization and integration of complex data in a way that makes it easier for users to make informed decisions in real time. The goal is to create an efficient and intuitive work environment, which will allow maritime controllers to deal with complex challenges effectively and accurately, while maintaining a high level of maritime security.
In the original version of the system we received for review, we encountered significant challenges related to information management and usability. The system contained a large amount of information, which caused a significant data load on the system screens, and therefore impaired its usability. Dealing with this data load led to the decision to split the interface into two separate screens with separate browsers. This process created an interface that was not synchronized, and impaired the efficiency and accuracy of users’ work.
As a result, we focused on improving the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) of the new system. The system now focuses on a broad spectrum of elements related to usability and organizing data in a clear and focused manner. We instructed the development team to develop advanced algorithms to filter and display only relevant data, making it easier for users to find what they need quickly and efficiently. We also used information design principles to ensure that all information is presented clearly and accessiblely, with an emphasis on ease of use and customization to the user’s needs. The new system also allows synchronization between screens and browsers, which helps users work quickly and accurately, while maintaining high system performance.
After a deep analysis of the data load in the system, we developed an advanced solution that combines high usability with synchronization of two browsers for joint work. The new interface allows for display on 2 screens, while maintaining all essential features, and ensures perfect synchronization of all data and entities in the display. This design adapts itself to the changing needs of the user, with parts of the system changing in size according to the focus of the maritime controller in each situation. This solution, based on advanced technologies, ensures both maximum usability and efficiency and accuracy in work, while taking into account the cognition and perception of the user, to improve port security.
As part of the development of the new interface, we conducted usability tests to validate the proposed solution. The results of these tests led us to make changes to the UI design, which are reflected in the current system. The goal was to reduce the density between objects and emphasize the most important functional capabilities for users. The updated visual design represents a clean and minimalist approach that focuses on content and improves the readability of data in the system, while facilitating a quick and immediate overview of the statistics relevant to the user.
In the updated design, we used special, striking colors to add dynamism and break the monotony of the maps and tables. This allowed the tables to not only make it easier to understand the situation but also to capture the user’s attention more effectively. This use of colors, combined with a deep technical understanding of the problem, creative solution, consideration of user cognition and use of the latest technologies on the market, led to an efficient, intuitive and personalized user interface, providing a rich and improved user experience in the field of port security.
